pyramid6Apr 26, 02:54 PMI think that these two quotes from Tim Cook during the last Apple quarterly call, put the nail in the coffin:

"We've got the largest app store ..."

"... iPhone's integrated approach is materially better than Android's fragmented approach, where you have multiple OSs on multiple devices with different screen resolutions and multiple app stores with different ... "

Since Apple itself uses the word generically, I don't see how anyone can argue that it's not.

Isn't this what Amazon filed recently?

There are some interesting reads about trademarks on Wikipedia. I think one of the reasons Google doesn't want people to use the term "google it", is because it makes the trademark generic, and they can lose it.

MacFeverApr 19, 11:49 AMApple will be pushing out Thunderbolt for sure....

I wonder when the cinema displays will get the thunderbolt port for daisychaining ?

Macbook Air with the iMac?

I think Professionals will be waiting to upgrade to hardware unless it thunderbolt ready like the MBP....huge advantage for Pro use with thunderbolt as opposed to current firewire 800.

miloblitheAug 31, 02:36 PMI really think it's about time the Superdrive came standard on all Apple computers, it 2006 not 1996. Hopefully the MacBook will also get Superdrive in both models.

The first mac to even come with the option of a superdrive (meaning writes DVDs) was the PowerMac G4 that came out January 2001. In 1996, Macs didn't even come with CD-R drives.

ButtheadOct 23, 11:46 AMUnfortunately, the current MBP is restricted to about 3.2GB because of the 32bit CPU *AND* the 32bit i945 chipset. Intel won't have a 64bit mobile chipset until they ship Crestline (the i965 mobile chipset for Santa Rosa). So, unless Crestline is ready early and Apple has some sort of exclusive agreement, the updated MBP still will not allow anyone to use more than approximately 3.2GB of RAM.

...

Arrgh, MR Administrator should now be boiling up a pot of linguine noodles for self-flagellation. ;P Then do the right thing and fold this thread back into the main MBP rumor thread...sheesh! Not another thread of people who have not read through the 3.6k posts in the main thread on the MBP, all this people rehashing the same stupid "it better have this, I want crestline, I hope, I hope upgraded GPU (not gonna happen, sorry), I want this upgrade and that...NOT GONNA HAPPEN.

Look it's simple Apple couldn't get enough if the lower yield, highest speed Merom chips after they decided to use them in the iMac 1st (while all the PC manufacturers used Conroe for their desktops). meaning that Apple had to wait for Intel to supply them with enough chips to roll out the laptop Meroms, based on exactly the same Napa chipset/platform that the Yonah MBP's are based on. It's simply a minor speed bump by changing over to the 64bit Merom, with very few other upgrades that would constitute a 'silent' upgrade.---same as iMac, just later than iMac cause they couldn't get enough chips for both the iMac & MBP at the same time. End of story.

Major upgrades or case redesign (for better cooling, which would require new motherboards) will not come until Santa Rosa chipset/platform becomes available NEXT year.

http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=2943835&postcount=2906

But to repeat from that prior post link of a Sept 26th story:

http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2006/09/27/intel_intros_santa_rosa/

"Intel is still saying Santa Rosa will ship in H1 though it's expected to come late Q1/early Q2"

No, Santa Rosa (which Crestline is a part of) will not be showing up miraculously early for Apple this year (or any other manufacturer) only via "exclusive" lol- the mighty Steve-O is all powerful, yet IBM & Freescale blew him off, dream on.

GM965 official name for 'Crestline' mobile chip that comes with integrated Intel GPU (MB's will likely get this one too to the dismay of the MB hopeful; sorry Apple goes for the absolute cheapest solutions in the MB line, this is their history, remember the 1st iBooks that omitted the FW port, even though the MB had the FW support on it!). PM965 would be the one Apple will use for separate ATI or Nvidia GPU.

zivilistApr 19, 01:36 PMPlease...Please...Please...provide a pro graphics card option (FirePro or Quadro)

Not possible: the iMac is not a workstation. Hopefully a big HD6xxx and a big hexa and quadcore are included.

I just hope that the SSD option is more affordable. For me the top chip on the 27inch is a no-brainer but the SSD turns a $2200 computer into a $2950 computer. Hell, in San Francisco I have to tack 9.5% tax on that too.

Agreed. 64 GB and 128 GB SSD option would be nice (already posted this feedback to apple).

China, Cuba, Russia, North Korea.

guezSep 7, 03:37 PMActually the move to Intel has opened Apple to fast depreciation - and that isnt going away.

Many here seem to 'bitch' that Mac is now in competition with the PC in the hardware stakes and sadly that damages your resale value however the benefits are immense, I am sure Apple will be able to secure lower unit costs aswell as faster processors and newer technology. Its great for apple and for us buying, just bad if you sell hardware before it looses all value completely. It also means we will see these refreshes more often and so we will be buying more up to date hardware which as a PC user is great...

This raises an interesting question. I'm not so much interested in depreciation as obsolescence. My experience has been that if you buy the right Mac (this is key), it can last 4 years, or more, and system updates/upgrades will not seriously degrade performance (sometimes there can even be an improvement, as with Panther). This is NOT my experience with Wintel. Is this going to change with Intel? Perhaps the readership of this blog does not fall in this category, but Macs have historically appealed to those who want to spend a little more money for more value (including a longer useful life)-the same people who drive a Honda Civic into the ground rather than buying a Chevy Malibu every three years (sorry, I couldn't think of another example).

Are we entering the age of the Walmart-ifation of Macs: less value, but cheaper?

valanchanApr 12, 10:12 PMJust read something today to the effect that Peter Jackson is following James Cameron's lead and shooting 48fps on the "Hobbit"; gambling that enough digital theaters will upgrade to 48fps by the time the "film" arrives in a couple of years time. Guess that is the beginning of the end of the "film" look for at least action movies.

This is so that each eye receives 24fps for 3d. So finally 3d will now look like a 3d "movie" rather than a 3d flip book.

TheBobcatNov 27, 01:27 PMMaybe Apple just needs to lower its monitor prices to sane levels as opposed to the ridiculous prices that they currently stand at. Justify them all you want, if Apple really wants to push its monitors, those prices need to come down. They might have flew 3 years ago, but enough is enough.

I just got a 22-inch LCD for $370 (US), and it's not a piece. Quite frankly, I can't really tell the difference. Plus it has better adjustments and I/O. It doesn't have the Apple look, and it only has 1050 horizontal lines of res but, that's not worth the extra dollars for me.
