vrillusionsMar 25, 04:38 PMThat looks really impressive, makes me want to buy an iPad 2 (or a playstation :D).

Actually a lot of the games for the ps3 or xbox 360 have a native resolution of 720p and they'll upscale to 1080p. Gran Turismo and such probably do 1080p because that's one of their things is hyper-realistic graphics.

The CaptainApr 13, 01:44 AMBecause pros don't need features to make their life easier, and help automatically organise footage?
No professional would let the software identify their subjects. Features like this do nothing to lighten the workflow of their productions. Only amateurs would allow an algorithms to determine what gets logged as what. Regardless of how the rest of the program turn out, the facial recognition is something only amateurs will use. Professionals have a higher standard of quality, and more complex needs than that.

Roy HobbsJan 2, 10:48 AMAn iMac with an adjustable screen height, with dual C2D chips.

I would love to see an iMac with a height adjustable screen. Dual c2d chips would be nice too. But I would rather have the height adjustment. My wife wants a 24 inch iMac but the hutch on her desk is 0.6 inches to short.

BLUELIONApr 3, 01:42 PMApple is not trying to rub it in your face to other companies, but more important it is using the subtle nuance of the product as it targets partners into coming on board with the iPad, iPad2.

I actually think this isn't apples best ad. I mean there is nothing wrong with it, but I usually expect more from apple.

They better make another ipad 2 ad, because this is there only one

kelving525Sep 20, 11:10 PMWhat was the checkout like? Did you have to go through their checkout? I'm always suspicious of those places, and am concerned that they're using unsecured special checkouts and/or are stealing identities. And I'm not usually a suspicious person.

But it's hard to resist for $1.00. The Griffin Reveal I bought was a ridiculous $25.

Do these fit on the cases snugly or are they kind of loose?

Yea, it was through paypal, so I'm pretty sure it's safe. Wired transfer on the other hand can be shady. It fits pretty well actually, you would've thought they were loose! But they are not bad for $1!

AngrisanoSep 6, 08:05 PMI can not believe how long it has taken me to finally bother to register here...And it has taken the release of an iMac to do it.

Ironically I've been a longtime reader myself and just registered because of this article, though for exactly the opposite reason as you. :D

And yes I realize my complaints about a mid-range tower probably seem pointless to most. But the iMac just doesn't seem to meet my needs. I'm happy with my current dual monitors (which match in size and resolution) and I'd prefer more than a 128mb graphics card.

Moreover, I've been a Mac user since 1993 and never owned a single LCD-based Mac which didn't have a dead pixel. That's about seven Macs, including my current MacBook. Bad luck, I realize but I'm just not buying an all-in-one desktop from Apple. :p

Gregg2Apr 11, 07:57 PMA CVT is simply a transmission with no fixed gear ratios. It can have any gear ratio between a set minimum and maximum, it has no "steps" like "1st gear, 2nd gear". In other words, it's a transmission type where you could theoretically have the engine spin where it produces the most power (let's say at 5000 rpm) all the time while accelerating. In reality, car CVTs do still have gears, like the Honda Fit which is a 7 gear automatic CVT transmission.

CVT, DSG or the traditional fluid type are all automatics. They just differ in their inner workings. What you're talking about has nothing to do with the inner-working, the paddle like shifters or + - gates on the shifter is simply an interface that lets you override any of the automatic transmissions and select your own gear.

A distinction to make. You could technically have a CVT transmission that you put in "drive" and drive off and you could have a traditional automatic with paddle shifters. Both are unrelated in their function.

Interesting, even for someone not real mechanically inclined, such as myself. And yes, the CVT on my soon to be new vehicle can be placed in "regular" drive and it behaves as a normal automatic. You can also use the CVT without the paddles, using the shift lever instead. In fact, you can get one that doesn't even have paddles. The ones that do also allow you to use the shift lever to "change gears".

barkmonsterApr 27, 11:59 AMYou can't be more wrong. I was writing Web Apps in the 90s using mod_perl, Apache and PostgreSQL.

Other OSes have also had Applications associated as a word to describe the software that runs on them by the media and internally, see this 1989 reference to OS/2 :

http://books.google.com/books?id=JzoEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PT40#v=onepage&q&f=false

I was simply suggesting that Apple used the term "App" as a familiar leaning to the way they call software "Applications" in Mac OS. Also, Apple have being refering to software that runs on their operating systems as "Applications" since 1980: -

The Apple Lisa (precursor to the original 1984 Macintosh) had an Applications folder in 1980.

http://www.guidebookgallery.org/articles/inventingthelisauserinterface/pics/fig6

The Macintosh has obviously had an Applications folder from 1984 to present

In terms of GUI history and it's conventions, there was the Xerox Alto as far back as 1973 but from all the screen shot hunting I've done, it seems to have no Applications or Programs folder because it has a "starting point" (indicated by the Start box) and then a list of files to open, some of which end in .run which presumably are executable programs/applications: -

http://www.computerhistory.org/revolution/input-output/14/347/1857

So yeah, "The Macintosh" wasn't the first GUI that had APPlicationS but Apple appear to have a LOT of prior use of the term with the Lisa OS before it in 1980 and GUI consistency between Mac OS X and iOS being a cut down version OS X, they logically refer to Applications on iOS devices in a cut down form too.

FuchalMar 22, 03:49 PMJust curious, Why?

Bluetooth headphones, bluetooth audio in cars, etc

peharriAug 19, 08:24 AMYou step into your car. The bluetooth receiver in your dashboard automatically detects the presence of your iPod. The finger controls on the steering wheel switch from controlling radio stations to stepping through playlists etc. It "just works". No cables. No need to even take the iPod out of your pocket or bag.

That's why I want wireless. Well, one of the reasons.

Of course, the bluetooth feature's great and all, but it's the 802.11g support I love using. I walk into the office, and suddenly the playlists of all of my collegues who run iTunes appears on screen. Another collegue has his own wireless iPod, and his playlists appear too. It's just like iTunes's shared playlist feature, only it's on my iPod too. It's nice enough having everyone's iTunes playlists in iTunes, but this really takes it to a dimension where it becomes truly useful.

That's why I want wireless, well, one of the reasons.

But, you know, I have my own music tastes, and there are only two or three fellow classical music fans in the office. I could listen to the radio, but only the NPR station here does classical, and that's only part of the time. Still, there are a bunch of netradio classical radio stations, so I can expose myself to even more sources, and I'm not limited by the relatively conservative selection of my collegues and friends. I go to the root menu, Radio Stations -> Favorites -> Classical 24, and now I'm receiving streamed audio from across the country.

That's another reason why I want wireless.

To all of you saying "I can't see why anyone would want wireless", I can't see why you wouldn't want wireless. Small scale sharing. Automatic integration with music systems. Net radio. What's not to love? And for what, a couple of dollars in chips, some improved firmware, and probably the same amount of battery life (given you'll not be running the hard drive)?

guzhogiJun 22, 11:58 AMI wouldn't mind an iOS-type OS on an iMac as long as it had some more features of a full-fledged desktop OS. As in:

-Multiple Users
-Printing
-Some kind of file system
-More apps of a creative side (ie movie editing, word processing, programming, etc.) instead of just media consuming apps

Note: this list is not exhaustive; there are many more features I'd like that I just can't think of at the moment.

Plus, some games/apps will need to be done, specifically those that need the accelerometers. I don't think people would want to swing around a 20/30 pound computer. But that would be a good way to make more money; people keep breaking them so they'll have to pay for repairs/new ones.

Who wants to be touching a vertically standing screen all the time, that's tiring!

Maybe this is why we didn't see OS X 10.7 info because it might include support for this...

I was actually hoping to see a completely new mac Pro with new very high res screens and wireless trackpad.

I doubt 10.7 will be such an overhaul. Probably more like Mac OS X 11.0 or a totally new naming scheme.

GregAAug 24, 09:41 PMI suspect we'll see slight case redesigns for Santa Rosa-based Macs. Santa Rosa will be the real Core 2 platform. This year's Meroms are a stopgap.Isn't everything a stop gap, in that sense? Just with sweet spots along the way :)

as well as include new WiFi and the "Robson" flash technology for fast-booting.I'll have to look up Robson... I imagine Boot Camp will work quite well if it only takes 10 seconds to switch from an active Mac to an active Windows machine...

stevehpOct 23, 08:23 AMplease let this be true. I've had enough of waiting and these posts are too much to handle every week!

archer75Sep 6, 10:16 AMI'm going to buy the basic Mini... the size makes the difference, since it's going to be used at different locations (every few months in a different country ;) ). A superdrive would be nice, but not neccessary.

You can add in your own super drive for cheaper. Newegg sells a nice Pioneer DVD burner that works in the mini for $72

AidenShawAug 26, 07:41 AMA better question is: when does the LCD OR the computer die, especially in the case of Macs? I would say never...
Mr. Lawyer, there are several people on this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=227917) who would beg to differ with your opinion about the immortality of Apples....

And, by the way, I did say "Or, more likely, when the computer is obsolete you have a good screen that you can't use." - so I clearly wasn't suggesting that LCD or system failures were that common.

Let's just keep it simple. Here are the two things that are in the air:

1. WIMAX type wireless for MacBook Pros
2. The ability to sync your iPod and iPhone without a cable
