Travis BickleMar 24, 01:34 PMProbably a daft question but i'll ask anyhows so forgive my techie noobness!
With the advent of thunderbolt and its high bandwidth, will it possible for a gfx card to be sited externally in some kind of cradle and be used as the main gfx card or wouldn't the internal "plumbing" allow it to happen ?

kdarlingApr 21, 03:41 PMTo those laughing at this and pointing out that Android phones don't have a file recording your movements
Yep, apparently Google's engineers also cache WiFi and Cell Ids. Caching makes sense for a lot of reasons.
The only differences are that with Android, the log is far shorter because older entries are overwritten. And of course the file isn't copied to a mothership computer for all to see. That's a downside of being an iTunes dependent device.
I do think that guy is right and it is only about caching the cell tower locations. I baffles me however which idiot engineer at Apple thought it would be good idea to store those locations along with detailed timestamps unencrypt and even move it to the next phone if you happen to switch phones. If you work on such a high profile system, you need to make smarter decisions than that.
Even though it's an understandable coding design goof, I'd hate to be in that programmer's shoes today. Perhaps s/he worked so hard that s/he never even left Cupertino on trips, and so never thought about it being a problem :)
On such personal mistakes, do big real life probems sometimes hang.
The Google hotspot data collection thing was similar: debug code left in, and the original developer long gone.
In any case, all the whining needs to stop. It's clearly an unintentional mistake, again same as happened with Google. Yes, better code vetting is needed. So it goes. Nobody is perfect.
The second thing that baffles me is Apples blatant incompetence handling these kind of situations. Haven't they learnd anything from antenna gate?
That's always been Apple's style under Jobs. Pretend that nothing is wrong, and hope it all goes away. Most of the time, it works.
lizard79Dec 3, 03:40 AMone thing i was wondering about the iTV is: why hasn't it got an iPod dock on top of it?!

kaseiSep 6, 06:06 PMHigh quality and the ability to burn them is at the top of my list. I would also like to see a reduction of time it takes for a movie to go from the big screen to my laptop screen.
If Apple and the Entertainment Indudstry are able to do that, they will have a hit on their hands.
Donald Trump, President?

Presidential bid? Donald Trump
BuiltApr 3, 01:05 AMYou did a poll asking hundreds of people if they are waiting for this very reason? Dude you're way wrong. The "many" people you are referring to are probably a very select number of....MacRumors members. Hardly indicative of the general population. I don't know if you heard- but people are going mad trying to get their hands on one. Your "theory" or whatever it is about people waiting to make sure the kinks are worked out is, well....stupid. I've read this whole thread and you seem to be on a kick about the light-bleeding issue. Yet you dont own one? Interesting.
Perhaps if you spent more time educating yourself and less time convincing yourself that a flawed product is acceptable, you would learn something. Try googling the issue.
Based on the way you write, however, I am going to guess that you won't take the time to do so.
Some people are just not interested in facing the truth.

I think that if the App Store wasn't regulated, this app would clearly have standing to be in there, as would an app that was misogynistic, anti-semitic, or pro-flatulence.
However, Apple (and Steve Jobs in particular) has said that the App Store is meant to "protect" people from certain things (namely porn). Since Apple has the right to determine what goes into its store, I think it's fair to ask that an app that is more offensive than porn (most people disagree with this type of "therapy" and approve of homosexuality compared to the level of disagreement there is with porn) should be similarly removed from the App Store.
I think there's also a Pandora's Box in that if this App delves into trying to "cure" people of some non-existent psychosis, could Apple be guilty of aiding and abetting the practice of medicine/psychology without a license? I'm not saying there's an answer to this, but it certainly does leave the door open to more problems.
There are homeopathic apps in the AppStore. Those won't work any better than this 'pray the gay away' app, but they still are allowed in the store.
To date Trump has been all

FrobozzMar 25, 09:40 AMNop... consider.
2x CPUs 130W rated. So thats 260W, right there. However, no CPU consumes the rated, so it's give or take ~260W.
Each 5770 is ~108W, given two, that's ~216 W. Right off the bat we have ~476 W being consumed. Not bad; however let's look at the side where its not a dual 5770 setup.
The PSU on the Mac Pro is rated for 980 W of power, but for simplicity sake let's say 1 kW. Now, factor in the Super drive, Ethernet, Airport, at least 1 HDD and peripheral docks/cards you are looking at ~100 W. Take into account a 20 W per 1GB of memory (assume 6GB) and you've got ~120 W more. So far ~ 220 W more.
Now we have ~480 W [~260W + ~220W]consumption leaving only ~520 W left for a GPU. Currently, the HD 6970 requires 2x 8-pin connectors to provide 150 W per pin. That's 300W right off. So we are left with ~220 W in the system. Now, factor in that PCIe slot power draw at 75 W and we've got a ~145 W left over. ~145 W is cutting it too close and something will yield (yes I do realize 145 W is a lot more, but read on). Now, the sad part, we were assuming 1kW PSU which is not the case; it's 980 W meaning there will be less power, ~125 W. Now, also take into consideration no PSU is 100% efficient, hence there will be greater power outlet draw and the PSU will be operating at high voltage/amps and its life span will decrease dramatically over very high usage.
In other words the current PSU may come up short. Add to that the fact that all current shipping and past model Mac Pros don't have extra dual 8-pin connectors. They have dual 6-pins. There is an adapter to make a 6-pin into an 8-pin, but it is risky at best, big no-no.
So as you can see an HD 6970 would be barely supported on current models. Future models? Perhaps yes assuming Apple bumps to 1.1kW or 1.2kW PSU.
Take into account this was calculated assuming 6GB of memory and 1 HDD, anymore RAM (20 W/1GB) or HDDs (10W/disc) and the consumption will go up. Also, assuming nothing is hooked up to peripheral ports; like a small external drive that draws 5-10 W.
I have an 850 watt PSU in my gaming rig with a 4870x2 and custom coolers all around on the CPU, GPU, and case. I think your calculations are pretty close to correct if you wanted to run everything in the case at once. But that's not typical to run everything at max all at once. I suppose Apple might not want to get in the business of telling people it's okay to buy this honking huge GPU as long as you're not running a lot of extra hard drives and extra PCI-E cards.
But, for people looking to simply drop in a fast GPU and not have a lot of extra bells and whistles (read: a gaming rig), they would be fine with 850 watts or so, even with a 6970. Or at least damn close.
The tricky part with GPU's is that the high end units commonly exceed rated specifications at max load, so these calculations are tricky. And your point about running too close to your max is also a good one. It's fair to say that when you add up all your max dissipation, add 20% or so, and that's the wattage your PSU needs.

rockthecasbahAug 16, 09:01 AMWireless iPod? I just don't see the point. Given how energy dense batteries are today syncing with iTunes would drain the battery in no time.
Wireless headsets? Big cluncky things that needs to be charged too.
The only rational for a wireless iPod would be if it became more of a PDA with GPS, or if went iPhone.
That is what i don't get, what is really going to be included in a wireless iPod? The only thing i could see is that it gets the ability to purchase music from iTunes or you stream internet radio or something. Also, the waste of wireless syncing to a computer. Am i missing something bigger?

k995Apr 23, 03:17 AMyou can turn off the GPS in a phone and most people assume that when you do it stops tracking you yet as it already been shown it just starts storing info base the cell towers.
I just do not like the fact you can not opt out of it. It just feels wrong to me.
Not just wrong but probably illegal in several countries.
My own country belgium for example its illegal to store such data without consent of the person itself.

XapplimaticApr 4, 05:05 PMI have to agree with all the other posters who say Apple doesn't need saving. It was saved the moment Steve stepped back in the door. It's profits haven't been higher in years and its market direction never more positive. Apple's market share is increasing again and profits are up 33% year over year... so what exactly is in need of saving?
Go save Gateway.. they're the ones closing stores instead of opening them... lol

DVC-PRO is a Panasonic created format.

1984Aug 29, 10:35 AMSince they are pin compatible why not use a Core Duo in the entry-level model to get the price down to $499 and use Core 2 Duo in the remaining models? Let's keep in mind this is being reported by ThinkSecret which is about as reliable as MacOSRumors or O'Grady's PowerPage these days. When Appleinsider reports on it I'll start to worry.
econgeekApr 12, 09:39 PMThe interface... iMovie. No Apple. No. :o
Thank you, right on time.
And also, it is exactly the FCP interface we've had since the beginning. And the beginning of time. (it really only depends on which elements you want to emphasize.)

eswankNov 23, 08:56 PMBought my fiance the iPhone 4 and will buy a new iPod Touch on Black Friday (buy it either at Toys R Us or Walmart to get a $50 gift card) so that we can Facetime while I'm out on my deployment.
skiltripOct 6, 01:07 PMThat looks great! I too am thinking about getting the Belkin Grip Vue. My BestBuy currently has all the colors in stock. Looks like the night sky is the hot seller there.
Question.. Just how big of deal is it that the volume and sleep buttons are covered? Just looks like it would be sort of a pain in the butt to push through the material to get to and then push the buttons, or is it less squishy than it looks??
The volume buttons are a little stiff, though the sleep/wake button is perfect. I'm hoping the volume buttons will loosen up a bit over time. I can adjust them pretty easily with my pointer finger when held in my right hand, but I can't do it very well with my thumb when holding in my left hand.
For what it's worth, I think part of the reason for the stiff feel of the volume buttons is the actual angled placement of the volume buttons on the iPod touch itself. They are awkward to press sometimes as it is, even without a case, so a case just exacerbates this. Even with that I still like the case a lot. And I do believe the material around the volume buttons will break in over time and become easier to press.
I Also just ordered a black Grip Vue (Tint) from Belkin's website ($24, free shipping). Basically the Grip Vue, but the semi see thru type , in a smokey black. I'll put up some pics when I get it.
Here's the stock image from Belkin's website, and the actual page link...
SpoonyApr 26, 02:52 PMHere is what makes me think it's not generic and apple would/should win.
There have been other online stores that sell computer programs/applications before apple created the "app store" None of them used the word App in their store name.
Apple launches a store just like these but better and called the store "App Store"
July 10, 2009 Apple's "App Store launches". Pre this no online stores used the term "app"
Post apples launch other phone makers/OS systems start to scramble.
App Catalog = Palm
App World = RIM
Amazon AppStore = Amazon
Stores that didn't ride apples coattails
Android Market = Android
Ovi Store = Nokia
Windows Phone Marketplace = Microsoft.
If "app store" was so obvioius and generic why did no one call their store "App store" until apple did? This is like everyone that argues that the iphone is so generic with it's icons and screen. I mean so obvious. No it's not obvioius.
If it was obvious Netjar, Mobilerated, Steam etc.. would just say "App Store" instead of some other random word.
Even the unauthorized iphone Store Cydia doesn't use the word app in their store name. "Unauthorized App Store" "Rogue App Store"
App Store is apple.
Even Wikipedia's serach term "app store" goes to the apple "app store" page. if want other onlilne phone stores you need to go to the disambiguation section.
