MacRumorsJan 1, 05:09 PM (

With Macworld San Francisco (MWSF) quickly approaching, MacRumors provides this Rumor Roundup as a summary of major rumors circulating around the Mac Web before the big event. (Previous MacRumors MWSF roundups: 2006 (, 2005 (, 2004 (, 2003 (, and 2002 (

While Apple's popularity continues to rise, the media coverage for Apple rumors reached an all time high this year.

Apple Phone (or Not?)

The one rumor that has received the greatest exposure is, of course, the Apple branded phone (formerly the iPhone ( Talk of an Apple-branded cell phone has been ongoing for years, however.

In when asked directly ( "Will there be an iPhone?", Steve Jobs replied "One never knows. We don't usually discuss products we haven't announced." In when questioned again about an Apple phone, Steve Jobs stated ( that they did not "feel they could add much value to current cell phones."

The Apple Phone rumor flickered to life again in February 2006 ( when research group UBS said "not to rule out an Apple-branded cell phone later this year". PiperJaffray made a bolder statement ( in March 2006 with a 75% chance of a iPhone in the next 12 months. Similar claims came from a J.P. Morgan analyst ( that "chatter about the [Apple Phone] is all over the food chain".

What finally triggered worldwide attention can be traced back to this Commercial Times report ( that Taiwan's Hon Hai has received a 12 million unit contract for the rumored Apple phone to be released in the first half of 2007. While regular MacRumors readers might realize that these Taiwanese supply reports have been wrong in the past, the proposed time-frame correlated ( with an earlier ThinkSecret report also pointing to "early 2007" for the release. As well, a reliable MacRumors source provided a description ( (and artist rendition) of what one of the existing prototype phones looked like at that time.

The first detailed specs came from Kevin Rose ( who had been previously known ( to have some inside information. Other (conflicting) claims/specs are also listed here:

- 2GB ($249), 4GB ($449), Slide out keyboard, "cool" OS, All Phone providers (Kevin Rose (
- 4GB ($599), 8GB ($649), Metal, Cingular Wireless, Full screen LCD, Virtual Click Wheel (Morgan Stanley analyst (
- GSM/EDGE device only (ThinkSecret (

While many news outlets are pointing towards Macworld San Francisco as the launch date of the Apple Phone, none of the more credible rumors have specifically pointed to Macworld as the launch day for the device:

- 1st half of 2007 (1 (, 2 (, 3 (, 4 (
- Not at Macworld SF (1 (
- January (1 (
- Macworld San Francisco (0)

While nothing would preclude Apple from announcing a phone at Macworld for a later launch, the evidence for a Macworld launch remains mostly speculative.

Mac Pro

Appleinsider suggested in October ( that an 8-Core Mac Pro was ready to launch as early as November 2006. While this did not take place, an upcoming 2.0GHz quad-core chip ( due in January will be priced at a reasonable $690/chip, similar to the current 2.66GHz dual-core Woodcrest that is currently offered in Mac Pros.

A recent Macscoop report ( claimed that the 8-core Mac would be on track for a January release.

Apple surprised many when they revealed the iTV in September ( at the "Showtime" media event. The $299 device offers a living room appliance that interfaces your media content to your television. A brief overview was provided, but the final shipping product was not promised until the first quarter of 2007.

Many expect Apple will provide more details of the iTV at Macworld.

Leopard was first previewed ( in August, revealing Time Machine, Spaces, Core Animation, and more (

Over the following months, only a few additional features have been revealed (, and no word of the "secret" features Apple has held back from their public preview.

The latest minor feature revealed has been the use of XAR ( for Leopard's package format.

Apple would likely demonstrate Leopard again at Macworld San Francisco, but the final release is not expected until "Spring 2007".

New Displays

Some sporadic reports ( of new displays have been distributed, but have been tainted by claims that they represent efforts to intentionally spread false information to rumor sites. As such, these rumors should be viewed with skepticism.

iLife '07

Unlike most Apple updates, the iLife suite has seen regular yearly updates released at the Macworld San Francisco expo. iWork '07 has been said to include ( significant updates to Keynote and Pages as well as the introduction of a new spreadsheet application code named "Lasso".

Video iPod, and Others?

Surprisingly, little attention has been given to the rumored full Video iPod despite clear evidence ( that Apple has been considering such a form factor. The latest word has placed the device in the early 2007 timeframe (

Three new iPod models were said to be in the works ( for but not necessarily at Macworld.

Surprisingly few Macworld San Francisco specific rumors have emerged this year in the months leading up to the event. This final week, however, always represents a busy time for rumors with last minute leaks common.

If you would like to meet up with other MacRumors members, this thread ( lists others going to the event.

No live Quicktime stream is typically available for the keynote event. Instead, we will provide live coverage of the event at ( The keynote takes place at 9am Pacific time on January 9th, 2007.

gnasher729Apr 26, 12:55 PMYes Amazon jump on the "it's generic" bandwagon.

Please lets just keep this thread about the response and not "But how is it generic. . ." "Apple didn't create App. . ." "Well Amazon is right it's generic. . ."

I don't think it's generic that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. I'm moving on.

Amazon's problem is that Apple actually has a valid trademark. Microsoft did the right thing: They probably want to use the trademarked term, so they sued Apple to get the trademark invalidated _before_ using it. There is no legal risk for Microsoft there; worst case they lose the court case and have to pay their lawyers and go home, that's it. Amazon did the wrong thing: They just used the trademarked term. They continue using it throughout this lawsuit apparently. So if Amazon loses, this could be very, very expensive for them.

Amazon did something similar with their cloud-based streaming service, which they started without permission of the record companies. Which means they are ahead of Apple and Google, but they are being sued now, and if anything sticks, this could be very, very expensive. Much more expensive than using "App Store" without Apple's permission.

aiqw9182Mar 24, 03:16 PMI'd rather have a CPU that is a bit slower for non-OpenCL tasks, than a computer that is faster at that but is unusable for other things because it doesn't have OpenCL.

Tad slower? If history repeats itself Intel's CPU will completely destroy AMD's offering. It won't be a bit slower, it will be a lot slower. Tell me when OpenCL suddenly becomes a requirement. Enjoy your vaporware bro. I'm sure your Llano machine will outperform Sandy Bridge in a few years when applications actually use the technology. Assuming said Sandy Bridge machine doesn't have discrete graphics. I'd love to know these apps you are using by the way and what your career is. If you are so serious about OpenCL then you shouldn't be purchasing a machine with an IGP to begin with.

Also I had a good chuckle at this:

"The future is fusion"

So you are a spokesperson for AMD?

SpoonyApr 26, 02:52 PMHere is what makes me think it's not generic and apple would/should win.

There have been other online stores that sell computer programs/applications before apple created the "app store" None of them used the word App in their store name.

Apple launches a store just like these but better and called the store "App Store"

July 10, 2009 Apple's "App Store launches". Pre this no online stores used the term "app"

Post apples launch other phone makers/OS systems start to scramble.

App Catalog = Palm
App World = RIM
Amazon AppStore = Amazon

Stores that didn't ride apples coattails

Android Market = Android
Ovi Store = Nokia
Windows Phone Marketplace = Microsoft.

If "app store" was so obvioius and generic why did no one call their store "App store" until apple did? This is like everyone that argues that the iphone is so generic with it's icons and screen. I mean so obvious. No it's not obvioius.

If it was obvious Netjar, Mobilerated, Steam etc.. would just say "App Store" instead of some other random word.

Even the unauthorized iphone Store Cydia doesn't use the word app in their store name. "Unauthorized App Store" "Rogue App Store"

App Store is apple.

Even Wikipedia's serach term "app store" goes to the apple "app store" page. if want other onlilne phone stores you need to go to the disambiguation section.

kreshJul 19, 05:10 PMLongShight i think you mean Vista will be here next year and will be a big cash cow for Microsoft - will it work as well as Mac OS ? no,will it be better ? no ...but people will buy it and still get viruses and spyware

I don't think that Windows is the reason that people will buy it. It has much more to do with the $499.99 price point, which buys a fairly decent machine for most home users.

Apple will never, ever dominate in marketshare. They are not geared for it profit margin wise, and I don't think they should be.

Seems like change for the sake of change. Hardly a groundbreaking new feature.

It's not about being groundbreaking perse. It's about making the look & feel of the UI similar to iOS devices so that those who use are using iOS devices but switching to the Mac don't have a steep learning curve.

Makes sense to me.

Globe199Mar 24, 10:14 AMI find it hard to believe anyone keeps their music uncompressed thats just dumb and plain lazy.

Good grief. The ignorance of some postings here is just breathtaking.

Course, it IS an Apple forum :D

All I have is an iPod mini from 2005. I use it almost everyday, but the battery is fried and I need an upgrade. I'd probably go for a 220GB, but I absolutely do not need a touch screen. Someone else remarked about the click wheel being easier to use in tactile-only situations, which for me is 99% of the time I'm using it. I bike to work and don't want to take the thing out of my pocket to change the volume, skip tracks, etc.

But Apple isn't about niche products, so I don't know what sort of chance the Classic stands. Probably not good, I'm guessing.

HuntnMar 19, 05:08 PMThe US could have sat this one out and it would not affect your pension or your healthcare. The cost of this UN mission is spread among all 10 nations and the freezing of Gaddafi's assets.

If the UN continued to ignore the people of Libya asking for the International community to step in ... Gaddafi would force the people to comply to him with deadly force.

IMO this will be a quick victory for the UN and the Libyan people ... Gaddafi can go live with Mubarak.

It's just the last time I remember a UN action it was 98% US in Iraq.

rumzApr 12, 10:34 PMThat price tag doesn't seem so ridiculous.

When was the last time final cut pro was available as a stand-alone app? Seems like last time I considered getting it, it was only available as part of the $1k suite. So $299 easily seems like a more reasonable entry fee than buying Final Cut Studio.

Blue VelvetMar 20, 09:02 AMOil reserves in Libya are the largest in Africa and the ninth largest in the world with 41.5 billion barrels (6.60109 m3) as of 2007. Oil production was 1.8 million barrels per day (290103 m3/d) as of giving Libya 63 years of reserves at current production rates if no new reserves were to be found. Libya is considered a highly attractive oil area due to its low cost of oil production (as low as $1 per barrel at some fields), and proximity to European markets.

The average cost of a Tomahawk missile is close to $1.5 million. But this takes into account the initial research and development costs. As a pure production cost it costs less that $500,000.

The maths doesn't lie.

syklee26Sep 7, 10:34 AMhere's a direct quote from store

"You'll get one main .Mac subscriber account with 1GB of storage space and four additional .Mac accounts with 250MB of storage space each"

so still a decent deal compared to apple price

well the problem is that sub accounts cannot exist without the main account and main account has to be renewed every year. so this essentially means i cannot use family pack by myself for 5 years.

InuNachoApr 19, 03:17 PMMy early 08 Macbook makes for a crummy desktop and I have been wanting a new TV for a while now. If Apple's having that free ipod with Mac purchase this summer I'm sold.

mljones99Feb 6, 09:03 AMdon't have an actual photo (the car is way too dirty from the recent ice/rain) but I currently have a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix and hopefully at the end of the year I'll be getting a Chevy Silverado 1500.

HorrortaxiApr 17, 12:42 PMWRONG !! The Mac was meant for everyone !!
Look at the pricing of Apple produts and tell me they're for everyone. Apple didn't make a mistake and dial the wrong price into their price gun, they did it on purpose. The $400 eMachine PC--THAT is meant for everyone.

Read Apple's own statement and tell me where it says their computers are for everyone:

Here's to the crazy ones.... The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently.... You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things.
Maybe they have to be crazy. How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art? Or sit in silence and hear a song that's never been written? Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?
We make tools for these kinds of people. While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.
Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.

Roy HobbsJan 2, 01:36 PMThe shown device was the "breakout box".

iTV is YA Apple "ecosystem" comprising of software like OSX, Front Row, and super DVR. It has a ($299) breakout box to hook to existing computers and TV's. It has a new iMac, which if you buy it, replaces 2-3 separate elements. It will have a supersize display screen with iTV enabled features.

Of course this is all speculation, but it is based on a wide ranging discussion of media experts since the pre-release of iTV.

If I had to bet on it I am willing to bet that what was already shown is all we are going to get. A "break-out" box that streams media from a mac to the TV
